Podcast Episode 418: Everything is EVIL

Everything is EVIL

Oh, Japan. You guys were responsible and you get to have in-person wrestling events. How we in the States envy you. That said, New Japan is doing some kind of amazing things with a limited roster. Believe it or not, Bullet Club is BACK! I mean, they never went anywhere, but let’s face it – they’ve been effectively neutered over the years as top industry stars came and went from the faction and New Japan as a whole. But now, it’s EVIL – and it’s working. Boo these men!

From the New Japan Cup 2020 to Dominion to Sengoku Lord – we’ve got a lot to discuss!

Podcast Episode 415: Naito!!!

First ever New Japan double champion!
Back in January, New Japan Pro Wrestling kicked off the year in their usual fashion – with a banger of a card on January 4 at the Tokyo Dome. Little did we know back then, though, that they’d have just a few more shows before shutting down for the majority of the first half of 2020.

It’s now June, and NJPW is back, baby! The New Japan Cup 2020 bracket has been released, and we are here for it.

Josh and Neo spent the last week or so (re)watching Wrestle Kingdom and catching (back) up on the storylines, rivalries, and top contenders as we head into the second half of the year. They break down some of the matches from the January show and share their hype over what’s to come.

If you’re looking for alternatives to WWE, or even just have a general curiosity about New Japan – we’d be glad to take you along on this journey with us!

In the meantime, add these to your watch list:

New Japan Returns with New Japan Cup 2020!

NJPW Cup 2020 logo

The New Japan Cup 2020 bracket has been revealed.

It has been over three months now since New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) put on a wrestling event, and quite frankly, I have missed it very much. But no longer! NJPW has returned with the Together Project Special and The New Japan Cup 2020! I am very excited about this!

The six-match Together Project Special card was a very exciting and much-anticipated event. The event has now passed; however, I encourage all of you to try and watch that. It is missing some NJPW stars, primarily from Bullet Club, but all the hits were there. And by hits, I mean Los Ingobernables De Japon vs CHAOS in the main event! PURO FUEGO!

Now on to the New Japan Cup 2020. This tournament I already know is going to be special. For the first time ever, there will be junior heavyweights competing in this tournament! This tournament will have 32 entrants, and of that 32, 13 will come from the junior heavyweight division. This tournament can really blur the lines between the junior and heavyweight divisions. After examining the bracket, it is a healthy mix of the weight classes, for example, Ishii vs El Desperado, that is a great mix! I am pulling for Ishii, but I hope it elevates El Desperado to another level.

The winner of the New Japan Cup will have a match against the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion, Tetsuya Naito, at Dominion July 12. Be sure to stay tuned to The Steel Cage for more coverage of the New Japan Cup 2020.
